10 Best Ventless Portable Air Conditioner 2022 Reviews

If you’re looking for a ductless portable air conditioner, then what you need is a portable evaporative cooler. A portable air conditioner without vent is something that does not even exist. Evaporative coolers are the best portable air conditioner no vent alternative. It should suit to refer to them as ventless portable air conditioner.

While there are various kinds of cooling solutions for the home, nothing quite beats evaporative air coolers for spot cooling. Consuming much less energy than portable ACs and similar appliances, these coolers use both fans and water vapor to considerably drop the temperature in a designated space. As a plus, it’s also great for humidifying areas during dry weather.

Living in drier climates, it can be very uncomfortable. The evaporative cooler, which is actually an affordable cooling appliance that works by evaporating water, is just what you need. It brings the possibility of making your space more convenient by allowing cool and humid air to circulate in every corner.

If all you need is to cool a room (or a specific part of a room), save yourself the setup labor and monthly costs associated with ACs and consider an air cooler instead. These coolers are a sort of cross between a full-fledged AC and an electric fan. While ACs use compressors and fans use only moving air to cool, an evaporative air cooler uses wind assisted by water vapor to absorb the surrounding heat. Water absorbs heat very efficiently, allowing you to cool your surroundings for a much lower cost.

Evaporative coolers are much more affordable than actual air conditioners. They come in a range of sizes and shapes. To help you choose which fits your needs the most, we’ve placed below a list of 10 of the best ventless portable air conditioner in the market.

Looking For A Portable Air Conditioner Without Hose?

One of the most relevant aspect about the use of air coolers is its use of less electricity compared to ACs. This is because they don’t use high energy consumption components like compressors. You’ll surely save money knowing that traditional air conditioners can take the electricity bill upwards by a lot. In this review, we present 10 of the best evaporative air cooler units in the market.

A portable air conditioner ventless unit may not be available, but it simply doesn’t end there. Below are your best options in your search for a portable air conditioner without exhaust hose to buy.

Honeywell CS071AE

1. Honeywell CS071AE Evaporative Cooler

Honeywell’s line of cooling appliances extends well into the field of evaporative air coolers. In fact, it dominates the segment in this regard. Foremost among its offerings is the sub-$150 Honeywell CS071AE, which sports a simple yet functional design coupled with a couple of nifty features.

Design

The design of the unit is a simple white block of plastic only broken by the louvres on the left and the water tank gauge on the right. The gray top contains a row of buttons, which controls the various air cooler functions. These allow one to control the 3-speed fan and oscillating louvres. The louvres are set to oscillate by default, dispersing the cool air efficiently throughout the target area and preventing hot spots from forming.

The unit is pretty lightweight (especially when compared to its portable AC cousins), at only 12.3 pounds. The base measures 10 by 15 inches, and the unit stands at 25.4 inches high. This allows easy mobility (especially assisted by the sturdy caster wheels), and placement even in between furniture and other appliances. The compact size is also useful if you want to take your unit into your bedroom during the night, and into other parts of the house during the day.

A remote control also allows you to operate the unit from across the room. This includes the timer function, which is a good energy saving feature especially at night. The timer can be set anywhere from 30 minutes to 7 ½ hours.

Under the Hood

Speaking of energy saving, this seems to be what evaporative air coolers in general — and the Honeywell CS071AE in particular — does best. The power consumption of the Honeywell unit never exceeds 50 watts, thanks to a patented brushless motor technology.

This same motor allows the unit to cool up to 100 square feet of space, with an airflow of 150 CFM. It is notable that the airflow is up to par even with a few portable AC models, so the low-energy motor is pretty powerful.

Aside from the motor, the other half of the cooling is done through the unit’s water content. The tank has a 7-liter water capacity that is dispersed in a fine mist. This makes the Honeywell CS071AE perfect for humidifying dry air, and the big tank capacity means you won’t run out of cooling anytime soon. It can be used either during hot or cold weather, if you want to add a little moisture.

One great addition of the unit is the carbon filter that scrubs the air clean of impurities as it flows. This is perfect for people with allergies, or those living in high-pollution areas. Aside from the carbon filters, the honeycomb cooling media also works to absorb the heat more efficiently, therefore releasing cooler air.

Another special feature is the Low Energy-Quiet Mode, which allows the unit to operate at minimal energy consumption and noise emission. This engages the lowest speed setting, and is ideal for those looking to stay cool throughout the night without having to hear the humming sound of portable ACs. The low speed might mean more time to cool, but this also means you won’t dent your electric bill so much even if you let the Honeywell run overnight.

Pros

The Honeywell CS071AE offers a good cooling solution for smaller areas, for much less cost. Aside from a low upfront cost, the monthly consumption is also just a drop in the bucket (unless, of course, you run it 24/7). Aside from the inherently efficient motor, the low-energy setting and timer could also be used to further reduce the impact of the unit on your bill.

The unit’s carbon filter is also a great addition. This makes the unit ideal for city dwellers or those living in areas where allergens are constantly present. Carbon filters are more efficient than regular ones at blocking even minute particles and even bad smells.

Of course, the compact size also makes the unit very portable, so you can take it virtually anywhere around the house. If you’re looking to spot cool just a specific area, this is the perfect solution.

For those easily disturbed by the white noise of portable ACs (and those who would rather not invest in the expensive quiet of wall ACs), the Honeywell also presents a good alternative. It works quieter than a whisper, and it’s quite easy to forget that it’s there if not for its physical presence.

Cons

Like any evaporative air cooler, the unit only works best in environments with less than 50% humidity. Any higher than this and the cool air’s moisture will add to the surrounding’s hot humidity, making the air wet and uncomfortable.

For those looking for different variants of the same energy-saving device, various colors and capacities are also available. There is even an optional heater available for those living in cooler climates.

Overall, the Honeywell CS071AE represents the segment of evaporative air coolers very well, providing a good cross of comfort and value for money.

Honeywell CL201AE

2. Honeywell CL201AE Evaporative Cooler

While Honeywell produces a lot of different evaporative air coolers for almost all applications, not all of them are made equally. There are those like the Honeywell CL201AE that is lauded by some of its customers, and panned by others. Boasting an air flow that is stronger even than many portable air conditioners, this unit allows you to cool much larger spaces than usual. However, it’s intensely location-dependent, and it’s not as reliable as some of its siblings from the same brand.

Design

The Honeywell has a very modern design. Its solid gray color is adorned by a sculpted top portion and large air vents in front. The front also has the water indicator and remote control sensor, while the top has the simple control panel side by side with the ice compartment.

The side of the unit has a water inlet that allows it to carry more than 5 gallons of water. Despite that, the whole unit is still pretty portable thanks to its lightweight construction and caster wheels. At only 24 pounds, the Honeywell CL201AE can be carried to various locations at will. It is pretty bulky, though, so it might be tough to wedge it between furniture and other appliances. It has a height of 83.5 cm., and a base that measures 48 by 37 cm.

The remote control lets you operate the unit from a distance, and about the only time you need to get close to it is when you’re cleaning the filter or responding to the low-water alarm. The programmable timer (up to 8 hours) can be used to further improve the energy-friendly capabilities of the evaporative air cooler, while the 4 fan speeds can cater to any need.

The design of the unit’s oscillating louvres places the cool air at body level, making it better for spot cooling. It can also spread the cool air pretty well, which when set up right means you won’t have any hotspot on the targeted area.

Under the Hood

The unit is pretty easy to set up, and significantly so, especially compared to portable air conditioners. However, doing a bit of manual reading is highly recommended, especially to understand how (and where) to best use the unit. If you fail this, the unit could end up spurting a strong current of moderately hot air, like an oversized electric fan.

At its best, the Honeywell CL201AE can give you as much as 470 CFM. This comes at a consumption of only around 230 watts, so it’s pretty efficient. The raw power of the unit can let you cool up to 200 square feet, letting you fill up an entire lobby, for example, or a row of chairs with cool air. At home, it’s good for areas frequented by the family.

However, like all evaporative air coolers, this one is best used only in places with relatively low humidity. One of the great features of the Honeywell CL201AE is the humidity regulator, so you can control how wet the output will be. But since the unit relies on moisture to keep you cool, using it in high-humidity climates could end you up with a stuffy room.

Like others of its kind, it’s also important to position the unit with some space at its back, much preferably facing windows or an open door. The unit needs a lot of circulation to maintain its raw power, and failing that you’d get highly undesirable results. While other units would simply function inefficiently, the Honeywell CL201AE would outright fail you.

This is the most prominent grip of customers when buying this unit, at least those who weren’t able to catch onto these best practices. There are those who complain that the effective cooling range of the unit is much less than its advertised one. There are also those who find that the unit can only cool what’s directly in front of it, and that the louvres do not do enough to spread the air around. Still, others complain about the unit going through a full water tank in just about a couple of hours, and through a full ice tray in just a few minutes.

This is, of course, far from ideal, but these could all be prevented by properly setting up the unit’s location before use. This necessity, though, might not make the Honeywell CL201AE the perfect option if you want an evaporative air cooler that is ready to go right out of the box.

Aside from its raw power (when properly channelled), Honeywell also included a carbon filter for the device that makes it useful in city applications, whether in your residence or in offices. More efficient cooling is promised by the honeycomb pads. The whole setup is also fairly quiet, so it can be used in bedrooms even by light sleepers and those easily disturbed by the white noise hum of portable ACs.

Pros

If you’re looking for raw power in an evaporative air conditioner, and if you’re willing to spend a few minutes reading the manual to make sure you set it up right, then the Honeywell CL201AE is perfect for you. Aside from its strong circulation, the ice inlet allows you to enjoy AC-level coolness (albeit for short periods of time). This power is still matched by good power consumption through the efficient motor and the eight-hour programmable timer. The adjustable humidity setting is a great addition, letting you control how wet your air will be.

Cons

It’s almost as easy to get usage of the Honeywell CL201AE wrong as it is to get it right, so it’s not for those who want something that can be plugged and used right from the unboxing. If you want an evaporative cooler that fits in the tight spaces of your home, there are also better options out there. The same is true if your home does not afford any accessible windows or any significant space from which the unit could draw power from.

Overall, the Honeywell CL201AE is perfect for a very select number of applications; those whose needs the unit cannot meet still have a lot more Honeywell products they could browse!

Honeywell CL30XC

3. Honeywell CL30XC Evaporative Cooler

One look at the Honeywell CL30XC and you’ll get the impression that it’s something powerful. Even more powerful than the previous unit. Maybe it’s the height, coupled with the bulging middle. Maybe it’s the solid gray color, bound by the metallic girdle at the middle. Maybe it’s the more aggressive design of the air vent, positioned at the top and seemingly dominating its surroundings.

Whatever the reason, you’d find that your impression of a more powerful unit would be right. This unit is about as close to a portable AC as you can get without blowing up your electric bill. This is especially true if you live in a dry climate, which is almost the exclusive purview of evaporative air coolers.

Design

The macho design of the unit would look out of place if you are trying to keep your space modern or minimalistic, but it is a necessary sacrifice if you want to level up your cooling. The unit looks pretty much like the standard portable AC instead of a cooler. There are handles at the side, and the inlet and control panel at the top (complete with an LCD panel). The back features and equally aggressively-designed intake grille, geared to jumpstart the cool air circulation. Its product will be spread by an oscillating louvre, which eliminates hotspots efficiently. The air is thrown directly at body height, so you can get instant relief from the sweltering climate.

The unit also accepts ice as a cooling aid, and this can be loaded from the top. The water tank, which can hold almost 8 gallons, is a detachable affair. The remote control allows you to manage not just the 4 operating speeds of the unit but also the 8-hour programmable timer and the humidification level. That means you can always enjoy the coolness of the unit from afar, except when you need to replace the water or the ice. Or, when you’d like to bring your unit to where you’re going to be next (which is something you’d very much like to do with the Honeywell CL30XC).

The Honeywell CL30XC is only marginally heavier than the previous one we reviewed, at around 25 pounds. It stands at 85.6 cm high, and the base is at 45.8 by 35.2 cm. The impression of bulk doesn’t translate to paper, thankfully, which means it is possible to squeeze the unit in between various appliance and furniture. The caster wheels also help increase portability.

Under the Hood

Let’s start this section with the star of the show. The Honeywell CL30XC produces a whopping 525 CFM, which is easily industrial level. That means even if you cannot get enough space to generate cool air, you’ll still have enough air flow with which to cool down. In ideal conditions (and with both water and ice working to your advantage), it’s possible to cool down to around 78 degrees Fahrenheit on this unit. That’s around the level of a portable AC, at 80% less energy consumption! In fact, the unit only consumes 288 watts of power on low setting.

Of course, the strong air flow is not an antidote to a closed environment. If you keep the area closed, the air could get wet and sticky quite fast. While it isn’t as picky on location as the previous Honeywell unit, it still needs an open window or two from which to draw dry air from and where it can dump its wetter output.

The strong air flow of the unit also helps eliminate pollutants in the environment, thanks to Honeywell’s carbon filter. This makes the unit perfect for city dwellers, whether residential or corporate. Aside from the filter, there’s also the honeycomb cooling media that ensures you get continuous cool air.

Being an evaporative air cooler, the unit is also much quieter than traditional portable ACs (though, compared to less capable evaporative air coolers, it’s fairly noisy). That means you can use it in your bedroom, even if you’re a light sleeper. But you don’t have to limit the cooler’s usage indoors, either. In fact, the strong CFM also allows you to enjoy cool air outdoors since it doesn’t disperse before you feel its effects. This makes the Honeywell CL30XC a very versatile unit with a variety of applications. Indoors, the strong Honeywell motor lets the unit cool as much as 320 square feet of space. There is also a low water alarm, for when continuously cooling down is a must.

Pros

The unit is the perfect all-rounder, without any discernible weaknesses. It provides a really strong air flow, spread evenly by its oscillating louvres for everyone to enjoy. It also has the whole basic set of features comparable to that of a portable AC. The LCD display even lets you monitor the current settings, so you can replicate in the future which one works best for you.

The best thing about the Honeywell CL30XC is that it didn’t take too much of an upgrade on the size and weight department to squeeze out these features. You can still lug the unit up and down stairs and all throughout the house, without worrying whether it will be effective or not. It works in almost all environments, so long as there is a sufficient supply of dry air it could work on. And of course, the large water tank means you will have to fill it up less frequently.

Cons

If we were to nitpick, the only significant cons of the unit will be in the design. The bulging belly might not be to everyone’s tastes, and the detachable water tank could create additional complications.

Also, weird as it may seem, in the field of evaporative air coolers stronger isn’t always better. While it is for the most part, it is important to consider the applications of what you will be buying. Strong air flows, for example, might be less comfortable in more confined areas like small rooms. The Honeywell CL30XC might be an overkill for some, though it’s definitely a godsend for most.

Portacool PACJS2201A1 Jetstream

4. Portacool PACJS2201A1 Jetstream Evaporative Cooler

You’d be forgiven if you have started thinking that evaporative air coolers were meant just for small rooms. For the most part, they really are. But our next entry is not your usual swamp cooler. Coming in at just under $800 — more expensive even than some portable ACs — this is the first thing you should look for if you’re thinking of cooling massive areas. It’s fairly compact for the job, but with a jaw dropping airflow of around 2,400 CFM, it’s definitely industrial-rated. Meet your new heavy-duty cooler companion, the Portacool PACJS2201A1 Jetstream.

Design

It’s impossible to look at the Portacool PACJS2201A1 Jetstream and not think of “heavy duty” immediately. It’s pure black exterior looks like something you’d see in a concert or in any gathering of large numbers of people. The thick plastic does not attempt to be slim or streamlined, and basks in its unique shape.

It’s hard to tell which side is front when you first start using the Portacool PACJS2201A1 Jetstream (hint: it’s the one where the logo is). The tapering shape when viewed from the side is evidently made to funnel the air into a stronger current, from a large turbine within. The unit’s controls are on the right side, together with the water inlet. There is no remote control to speak of, since this isn’t primarily meant for domestic use (though of course, you could repurpose it).

The unit stands at a height of 42 inches, and its base measures 29 by 28 inches. This stands closer to portable AC size rather than that of its fellow evaporative coolers. However, that’s to be expected from a machine that bursts out air speeds of 30mph. The front has oscillating louvres so you could spread the cool, moist air around over a wider area than usual. The 20-gallon water tank ensures you won’t run out any time soon.

The unit has caster wheels, but it’s not made to be moved around that frequently. The unit weighs 87 pounds empty, so if you’re thinking of cooling a higher floor then you’d need to have an extra pair of hands.

Under the Hood

The Portacool PACJS2201A1 Jetstream is just as heavy-duty from the inside as it is from the outside. The entire unit is protected by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, as its construction is done in the USA and subject to strict quality standards. The independent electrical components, on the other hand, are covered by a limited 3-year warranty.

One of the most interesting pieces of technology in the Jetstream is the KUUL Comfort Microtech, which is a proprietary evaporative media used by Portacool. This system ensures that the water isn’t simply sprayed onto the stream of air for cooling. It evaporates the water into a very fine mist, allowing for a better cooling effect. This also prevents the water from humidifying the room too much, which tends to be uncomfortable. It is still recommended, though, that the unit is operated with a good supply of dry air.

This innovation is further implemented in Portacool’s unit of measure called the “KUUL Effect”, which takes into account the volume of air moved, the air speed, and the efficiency of the unit at producing the aforementioned units. The Portacool PACJS2201A1 Jetstream is rated at a KUUL Effect of 14, sealing its industrial-grade usage.

The whole back panel is made up of the copper-hued filter and cooling media, which is sturdy enough to withstand its exposure from the structure. While it does not have the carbon filter of the Honeywell models, it has enough filtering power to make sure it spews out air that’s clear of particulate matter. Finer pollutants such as chemical smell, however, cannot be taken out.

The unit is rated to cool up to 700 square feet, and is meant for outdoor applications or for those where people are expected to sweat a lot. Gyms and sports events would greatly benefit from the Portacool PACJS2201A1 Jetstream. It’s safe to use outdoors, since it has a medley of safety features. It also has an automatic pump shut-off that protects the unit from breaking down when the water supply runs out. You can also monitor the water from the outside through the liquid level indicator.

While this massive unit draws more energy than the other evaporative coolers we have reviewed, it is still much more efficient than comparative portable ACs achieving the same effect. The unit draws 3.4 amps and 115 volts, meaning you still get savings every month. This comes at the added advantage of not having to install anything — simply wheel in the Portacool PACJS2201A1 Jetstream and you’re ready to go.

Pros

If you need an evaporative air cooler that can take on wide spaces, or one where you don’t have to stand right in front of the unit just to cool down during hot days, then the Portacool PACJS2201A1 Jetstream is a good deal. It is a good cross between the savings of an evaporative cooler and the power of an industrial fan or a really good portable AC.

Cons

A unit this large is bound to be loud, so you might want to look elsewhere if you’re thinking of domestic applications. While it’s good enough to be used for living rooms and similar areas, bedrooms will be easily disturbed by the 68 decibels the unit churns out at high settings. The larger energy required to use this unit may also dent your monthly bill if you’re using it just for your house.

Overall, this Portacool unit is perfect for any application where the “usual” air coolers won’t suffice — just as long as those applications don’t require quiet operation or space optimization. The unit is also the boundary between the household appliances we are used to and the more powerful variants. In fact, the PACJS2201A1 Jetstream is the smallest and weakest in the Portacool line of coolers. The most powerful one has an airflow of 22,500 CFM! This only proves that energy-efficient cooling is a serious business, which manufacturers are just eager to meet.

Honeywell CO60PM

5. Honeywell CO60PM Evaporative Cooler

So far we have reviewed units that are rated either for residential areas or for commercial purposes. While these units can be repurposed for the other application with moderate success, this time around we will be reviewing a unit that is primarily meant for its versatility. The Honeywell CO60PM is meant for both commercial and residential usage, and offers a powerful alternative for those who want their air coolers to move beyond the basic spot cooling.

Design

The unit is made out in the classic evaporative cooler image: a giant electric fan, with a hefty bottom for the water tank and a thick shell for the other working parts. Honeywell made an attempt to distinguish the unit from the rest of the flock by giving it a modern design, with the dark gray and white contrasting nicely and the angled accents preventing the unit from looking boring.

The upper-left corner of the unit contains the three control knobs (in place of the usual buttons). These let you control the cooling, fan speed, and the swing of the unit. There’s no remote control to speak of, so these knobs will have to be manually moved. The lower left contains a water level indicator, while the right contains two knobs for the louvres. These are automatic oscillating louvers, which spread the cool air efficiently throughout your space.

The unit stands at a height of 40 inches, and its base measures around 18 x 28 inches. The 41-pound weight would make it easy to pull through the various rooms of the house (and outside), but only when it’s empty. The 60-liters of water its tank supports can add a lot of weight, and to enhance the unit’s portability Honeywell has added extra-strong caster wheels.

The unit has a 6-feet power cord, which makes up for its relative bulk. If you can’t squeeze it in between spaces to reach the power supply, the cord is there to help. This is also good for those outdoor moments. One of the unit’s special features is its weatherproof shell, allowing you to use it for outdoor applications with peace of mind. The rugged exterior is well-thought out — you can even connect the unit to a garden hose when outdoors, so you don’t have to refill the unit manually during extended usage. Whether indoors or outdoors, the Honeywell CO60PM attempts to create a set-it-and-forget-it experience.

Under the Hood

The Honeywell CO60PM is rated for cooling up to 850 square feet of space, which is significantly more than any domestic evaporative cooler model. That, added to the robust construction, gives the unit an edge versus many of its competitors.

Being a cooler, it’s much more energy efficient than any portable AC. You can expect to spend around $20 over three months in terms of operation costs, which is a drop in the bucket compared to the comfort it can bring. However, in comparison with other air cooler units of equal capability, the Honeywell CO60PM lags behind in terms of energy efficiency. There are some units that consume only half of the CO60PM’s 220 watts, but aren’t that much weaker.

Another area where the unit lags behind is in terms of operational noise. Granted that this machine can efficiently blow air for up to 12 yards (again highlighting its outdoor usability), it also generates at least 65 dB of noise. This would make you think twice if you’re planning to put the cooler in your bedroom, especially if you’re a light sleeper.

Despite these weaknesses, the unit stands out if you’re looking solely at the cooling department. Unlike some units with only one cooling media, the Honeywell CO60PM has honeycomb cooling media on three sides. This lets it retain water longer, so your water tank doesn’t run out that easily. This helps since the unit does not have any low water alarms, though it shuts down automatically to prevent the pump from breaking. If you wish to cool down even faster, there is also an ice compartment you can fill up.

One weird aspect of the unit is its warranty. Honeywell only offers a limited 1-year warranty, which is unusual given the rugged aspects of the device. One would have thought of a longer warranty period for something that is advertised for outside use.

One other feature amiss in this incarnation of the Honeywell brand is the carbon filter, or any filter at all. Its powerful airflow may be the result of the fact that there’s nothing beyond the cooling pads to impede the air, but this also means there isn’t a way to filter the impurities from the air.

Pros

The Honeywell CO60PM is a good middle ground between the common air coolers meant for spot cooling, and those huge and powerful evaporative coolers meant for bigger areas. If you have any reason to believe you’ll be using your cooler outside the comfort of your home, then this might be a worthwhile investment.

It’s in the outdoor application that the unit really shines. Because coolers by nature work best with a steady supply of dry air, placing somewhere with good circulation really highlights its cooling prowess. The powerful air flow (1,540 CFM) assures comfort no matter the setting, and the barebones features means there aren’t as many moving parts that could break down. The added perks like the bigger tank and hose attachment only serves to highlight the strengths of the device.

Cons

If you are looking for a quiet an energy efficient device, then it’s better to check out the other units mentioned in this review. The short warranty period also does not inspire peace of mind in a unit that is rated for exposure to the elements. At the same time, if portability is something you value, then other units might be more attractive. Despite the four sturdy caster wheels, a full-tanked Honeywell CO60PM is fairly heavy. For those looking to scrub allergens from the air, then the other Honeywell units are also better suited at this task.

Still, the Honeywell CO60PM fills in a gap that makes it a strong competitor in the evaporative air cooler market.

See Honeywell CO60PM Current Price

Honeywell CO48PM

6. Honeywell CO48PM Evaporative Cooler

We’ve been introduced to a couple of very powerful units, but Honeywell has quite a comprehensive line of swamp coolers. Up next is the Honeywell CO48PM, which is another unit rated for both indoor and outdoor applications. Only slightly less powerful than the previous one we reviewed, this unit shares the same overall appearance and weatherproof construction. Does it also share the same weaknesses? We’re about to find out.

Design

The Honeywell Honeywell CO48PM lost the modern-ish design, and instead stuck with the tried and true formula of solid gray plastic with white accents. The design is pretty spartan, with the only thing livening up the face consisting of criss-crossing plastic bars that separated the 14-inch blades of the unit from the oscillating louvres. The latter consists of two sets of vents that can swing separately vertically and horizontally, helping spread the cool wind around the target area. At the top of the otherwise square face is a slight bump carrying the three gray control knobs set against a white plate. To the right of the face, there are two additional levers.

Just like the CO60PM, the unit does not have a programmable timer or a remote control to speak of. These features had been removed and replaced with additional cooling power and durability, perfect for the unit’s target market. The unit has a very large 40-liter tank, which helps cool the air considerably. There is also an ice compartment to up the cooling effect.

The convenient features present in the CO60PM are also present in the CO48PM. This includes the continuous water inlet option, which allows you to attach a regular hose into the water inlet so you would not have to refill the tank during extended use. This is helpful when you are using the unit for an outdoor event, which it handles perfectly. There’s also the three-sided cooling medium, which helps cool faster and more efficiently than the single cooling pad that comes with most domestic-rated units.

Since evaporative air coolers work best when exposed to a steady intake of hot, dry air, the Honeywell CO48PM really shines in its outdoor applications. It can be freely wheeled into place thanks to its four caster wheels. On an empty tank, the unit weighs a hair less than 31 pounds, making it pretty light for its class. It’s also not as bulky as its bigger Honeywell brother, with its height only measuring less than 35 inches and its base measuring 24.4 inches by 15 inches. This makes it easier to squeeze between spaces when used indoors. It also has a 6-feet long power cable, which is great for both domestic and commercial applications.

Under the Hood

The Honeywell CO48PM has a 1062-CFM airflow, which allows it to cover a little more than 600 square feet. At this rate, the unit can cover more than the usual spot-cooling duties of its less-powerful siblings. This makes it powerful enough to be used in such open spaces as patios and yards, or even in indoor locations as garages and warehouses.

The biggest advantage in its reduced power over the CO60PM is the reduced power consumption. The Honeywell CO48PM has a maximum wattage of only around 150 Watts, making it friendlier to your monthly electric bill. Because the unit relies on evaporative cooling principles instead of a compressor, it is also much quieter than an equally powerful AC unit. The CO48PM has an operational noise level of only 62 dB. This could still disturb light sleepers, though, so you shouldn’t be putting this unit near your sleeping area if you’re one. In this regard, it’s only marginally quieter than the previous unit we reviewed.

Despite having a durable outer shell that’s meant to withstand the elements even under extended usage, the unit also only has a single year’s worth of warranty. This will take care of defective parts, but it also stipulates that it cannot be honored for units that have been used in ways other than the company intended. While it does not really shelve the durability of the unit, it would make one really careful about using it outdoors. It’s an investment that runs for around $350, after all.

One other weakness the Honeywell CO48PM unit has is its lack of any filters. That means if you are using it in a polluted place, it will be circulating polluted air without scrubbing it clean. This is about the only quality that smaller, domestic-rated units have the advantage in. On the other hand, there are cooling pads and other spare parts that could be easily bought for the unit.

Pros

This unit is a very low-maintenance machine that is meant to withstand both the sun and the rain. If it’s meant for indoor spaces, it’s guaranteed to bring you years’ worth of comfort without burning through your electric bill like a more powerful unit would. Like other units in the Honeywell lineup, there is also a set-it-and-forget-it system that makes it easy to set up and use. This includes the simple controls and the continuous water inlet for prolonged use.

There is also a water level indicator, in case you don’t want to hook it up to a hose. The large tank would take time before running out, and the strong airflow also means you’re covering a wide range wherever the unit is placed.

Cons

The unit shares pretty much the same disadvantages as the CO60PM, except for its lower electric consumption. The unit is still fairly noisy, and it also lacks the filters that would be useful if you’re using the swamp cooler in a city setting or in a place where there can be a lot of allergens. The large tank can also be a double-edged sword, as filling it up significantly increases the weight of the unit.

But there are tradeoffs in anything, and the Honeywell CO48PM still remains a very capable competitor in the series of evaporative coolers that straddle the line between the residential and the commercial applications. If you do not need something quite as powerful as the two previous units we reviewed, then this one might be more to your taste.

Honeywell CO70PE

7. Honeywell CO70PE Evaporative Cooler

So far we’ve discussed units that are both powerful and spartan, using strong airflows and weather-resistant bodies to make up for a lack of fancier features. But as we’ve mentioned, Honeywell has a very comprehensive line of evaporative air coolers, and there are those that cater to those who wants the best of both worlds.

Enter the Honeywell CO70PE, an indoor-outdoor swamp cooler that has a lot of nifty features fit for those who like their units a little more sophisticated both in looks and function. It has the same weatherproof exterior from the CO60PM and CO48PM, and the same domestic-friendly features as the earlier units we reviewed. Is it worth the $400++ asking price, however? We’re about to find out.

Design

It’s not just the features that is a hybrid between those of previous Honeywell units. Even the looks appear to take design cues from both world. The boxy exterior from the last two Honeywell units remain, but the fan is hidden behind louvres located at the top, just like a conventional residential-type cooler. These louvres are interesting, as they also function as auto-close shutters that engage when the unit is turned off. This protects the interior of the unit from dust, bugs, and other things that may enter it and damage the parts inside. The front of the unit also features an infrared sensor for the full-function remote control — a luxury among these kinds of evaporative coolers. There is also a knob for the humidity level, to ensure you’re not spraying your surroundings with mist.

The dark-gray and light-gray plastic construction lends some life to the design, along with the etched vertical grooves on the unit’s facade. On the upper-right corner of the unit is the control panel, which has five buttons for the mode, fan speed, power, timer, and swing. There are also indicator lights atop each option, so you can tell which setting the unit is switched to. Evaporative air coolers are already energy efficient by nature, but this can be further improved by using the timer to turn the unit off on schedule. If you are using the unit at your bedroom, for example, you can use the timer to automatically turn off when the night is at its coldest to conserve electricity.

Over to the right is a panel that fills the unit’s massive water tank (70 liters!). The unit only weighs around 41 pounds empty, but this can balloon largely once the tank is filled. To take care of that, the unit is equipped with four caster wheels with locks, so you can wheel it into place.

The unit is fairly large, though, at a height of almost 40 inches and with a base measuring 28 x 17 inches. The design makes it look less bulky than it actually is, but you might find difficulty squeezing it in between appliances and furniture if you’re using it indoors. Thankfully, Honeywell also included a 6-foot power cord to give in better access to the nearest power outlet.

Under the Hood

The Honeywell CO70PE has a host of of features that would make it perfect for niche applications. While the unit only has an output of 588 CFM, it makes use of high-pressure blowers to ensure good air circulation. These double blowers are also great for use on long and narrow spaces, as the unit can blast cool air farther. The unit can handle areas of a little under 350 square feet effectively.

Unlike the other indoor-outdoor units we reviewed, the Honeywell CO70PE has a washable filter that traps dust and dirt. This is made of plastic, and is washable. Depending on where you live, you might have to wash this at least once a week to ensure optimum air flow upon usage. Despite being an additional bit that needs maintaining, this makes the unit perfect for city dwellers or those who need a bit of air purification.

On the cooling side, the unit is equipped with a large honeycomb cooling media that allows it to store and disperse more moisture than other units. This makes up for the weaker airflow by ensuring the surrounding areas get as cool as possible. Additionally, there is an ice compartment you can use for especially hot days. The water tank can also be hooked up to an external hose, so you don’t have to worry about refilling the tank when using the unit for extended periods of time. In case you can’t hook up a continuous supply to the unit, there is a low water alarm to tell you when the tank needs refilling. The unit automatically shuts off when the water runs out, to protect the tank.

The unit also has an automatic power-on function after a power outage, a feature that is mostly found in portable ACs. This feature saves your current settings and restores it when the power goes back on, for uninterrupted cooling.

Pros

The unit has a lot of features that are much wanted in powerful evaporative coolers, including a remote control, a filter, and continuous water supply. There are also thoughtful additions like the auto-shut louvres and the extra-large honeycomb cooling media.

Overall, the unit merges power and convenience. This makes it a very attractive buy for those who want a relatively maintenance-free unit that can also be used with ease both inside and outside. The Honeywell CO70PE is proof that durable doesn’t have to be too simple.

Cons

Aside from the steeper price, there aren’t any significant drawbacks to this unit. We could point out the fact that it consumes more electricity than most, but that’s because of its extra features and its powerful motor. The only market that might think twice before buying this unit are the light sleepers who find the unit’s 65 dB noise level disturbing. Of course, those looking for extra long warranties might be cautious at Honeywell’s one year warranty especially for something that’s also rated for outdoor use.

Provided you could shell out its asking price, the Honeywell CO70PE is a very solid choice for those looking for strong cooling with minimum hassle.

Honeywell CO60PM

8. Honeywell CL25AE Evaporative Cooler

Going back to indoor air coolers meant for residential areas, we have the Honeywell CL25AE up for review. This unit looks plain and simple at first glance, and in a way it is. It does not have many tricks up its sleeve (especially when compared to our previous Honeywell unit) but it does have an ace — for an indoor evaporative air cooler, the CL25AE is really powerful.

Design

The unit has a plain white facade with black accents, which is pretty much the standard for most home appliances. It will not look out of place in a modern home, but it’s also not the type of appliance you would use to enhance the looks of your room. The plastic is shaped like a bulging box, which conveys the imagery of a lot of wind power emanating from the black louvres at the top front of the unit. A little later, we will see that it’s a pretty accurate design decision.

Also at the top are the various controls for the device. Being a strictly indoor unit, it comes with a full-featured remote control you could use. In case you lose it, though, or if the battery runs out, you could access the fan speed, swing, power button, mode button, and timer directly from the unit. The louvres also swing both vertically and horizontally, helping spread the cool wind around and eliminating cold spots. For the fan speed, there are four modes including sleep — you can set the unit to turn off after a specific time, so you can add to the natural savings of an evaporative cooler.

The cooler has a 25-liter tank, with an ice compartment at the top to help in cooling the surroundings. While the tank isn’t as large as the previous units, this would be enough for indoor applications. There is also a low-water alarm that allows easy maintenance.

The unit stands at a height of 33 inches, and the base measures 19 x 15 inches. This would make the unit a good fit for those who live in smaller spaces, as the Honeywell CL25AE can slip into tighter spaces between appliances and furniture. You can also freely wheel the unit into place through its solid caster wheels. Empty, the Honeywell weighs only a bit above 25 pounds. However, this can greatly increase when the tank is filled. There are also side handles to ensure the unit’s portability.

Another aspect of the unit that can be controlled is the humidity, as there’s a knob that you can use to fine-tune just how much water escapes the unit. This is important when the humidity of the air changes. By nature, coolers work best during hot weather and when humidity is low, but you can still change the settings of the Honeywell CL25AE to ensure you’re not spraying water all over your room.

Under the Hood

The Honeywell CL25AE has an airflow of 500 CFM, which is outstanding for an air cooler that is rated for the indoors. This gives you the ability to cool up to 300 square feet of space, making the Honeywell suited for applications more than spot cooling a specific area. You can cool an entire small room, such as dens, bed rooms, and the like. Provided there is enough supply of freely-circulating dry air, you can also cool medium-large spaces such as garages.

The unit sports Honeywell’s trademark honeycomb cooling media. This helps prolong the lifespan of the water in the tank, while also helping cool the air better. The unit consumes around 230 watts of power, which is good for the airflow and general cooling power the unit provides. At high speed the unit has a noise level of around 64 dB, which is also average for the unit’s power. This may disturb some light sleepers, but unlike most other indoor coolers you don’t have to place this nearby just to feel its effects.

The unit also has a carbon filter, which is a great addition. This makes the unit suitable for urban living, as it knocks out not just dust and dirt but also finer pollutants and even bad smells. Depending on your location, the filter might have to be cleaned up to once a week to make sure the airflow isn’t obstructed. This will also prevent the trapped pollutants from changing the quality of the air being circulated.

The unit, however, lacks a few features that would have made it a truly outstanding indoor unit. There’s no auto recovery for when the power goes out, for example, and there’s also no continuous water inlet system in case you need to use it for prolonged periods of time. The unit does have a timer, which makes it ideal for overnight uses. You can save even more electricity by setting the unit to automatically go off once you are asleep or at least until you feel comfortable enough with the air temperature.

Pros

The best selling point of this unit is definitely its strong airflow, allowing it to handle bigger spaces and giving you more options when it comes to cooling. It’s an energy saver compared to portable ACs, and if you’re living in a hot and dry climate then you would appreciate the power the Honeywell CL25AE offers.

If you are living in an urban neighborhood, especially with high vehicle traffic (or at least in a place where there are many potential allergens), then the unit also works because of its carbon filter. Added conveniences such as the remote control also make it a good option for many.

Cons

The drawbacks here are very common ones, such as the high noise level due to the airflow, and the lack of a more comprehensive warranty from Honeywell. The price is also a little steep for some.

The only things holding the unit back from being the perfect indoor swamp cooler is the same set of safety and recovery features found in the CO70PE. Nevertheless, the Honeywell CL25AE is a good unit that caters to a wide variety of users.

NewAir EC111W

9. NewAir EC111W Evaporative Cooler

And now for something completely different. We have featured a slew of Honeywell evaporative air coolers, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other good brands out there. Case in point is the NewAir EC111W, which is rated for the indoors. While evaporative coolers have already made a name for themselves in terms of energy saving, Newair seeks to top that by creating a model that consumes up to 75% less power than portable air conditioners. What else does it have to offer? We’ll test the unit in this review.

Design

It’s fairly easy to underestimate the NewAir EC111W. As we’ll see later, however, that would be a mistake. It looks like those old evaporative coolers, with a top that looks like an electric fan and a boxy body. It has some modern curves, so it’s not out of place in any home or office (or any indoor space). Even the black-and-white color scheme looks pretty good on it, too.

The base of the air vents has an LCD display, that lets you see the current settings. This includes a built-in humidistat for those who want to know when to adjust the unit. The base has a water level indicator, that tells you if the detachable water tank needs to be refilled. This detachable design allows you to bring only the water tank when it needs to be topped up, not the entire unit.

There is no continuous water inlet, which is a pity since the tank holds less than seven liters of water. Refilling would be done more often than in the Honeywell units we described earlier, but not that frequent since indoor usage shouldn’t dry up the tank that fast.

There is also an ice tank for better cooling. The push button controls also lets you access a timer that can set the unit to turn off automatically. The timer length is at 7.5 hours, which is enough time to cool a room for a night’s sleep or a day’s work. When set, the timer could be used to further the unit’s energy savings even more. There are three fan speeds so you also have options on how much cooling you need.

The NewAir EC111W stands at a height of 35 inches and has a base that measures 16 x 11 inches. It’s not exactly compact, but it’s slim enough to be unobtrusive. The caster wheels let you carry the unit across rooms and up the stairs if needed, since the unit only weighs about 17 pounds when empty. If you need to access the unit from across the room (or even from the next room, so long as you have a direct line of sight), there’s also a full-function remote control that you could use.

One of the weaknesses of the unit is that the louvres aren’t adjustable so you can’t focus the air exactly where you want it. The spinning screen-like cover has inclined vents, which takes care of air distribution. The inclines are fixed, though, giving you less flexibility when it comes to spot cooling.

Under the hood

Here’s something surprising: this slim unit has an airflow of about 500 CFM, which is pretty powerful for an indoor unit. It’s able to cool around 250 square feet, which allows you to work comfortably even in medium-large rooms. This is even better when you consider that the unit consumes only about 110 watts, around half of the power consumption of some of the previously reviewed units. So long as there is a good supply of hot, dry air, the NewAir EC111W can reliably cool your surroundings without denting your monthly power bill.

While it lacks a carbon filter for finer pollutants and smells, the unit is equipped with a washable dust filter that scrubs the air free of bigger allergens. The filter can clog up the circulation when there’s too much dust stuck to it, however, and the filter might have to be cleaned up to once a week depending on your location and the pollutants in your home.

The NewAir EC111W is equipped with a “3D Cooling Pad” which increases the cooling efficiency by passing the hot dry air through a thick evaporative cooling media. This development makes cooling faster and more eco-friendly, so you can feel the effects quickly. Depending on your location and climate, the unit can cool down the temperature by as much as 20 degrees Celsius. This is on the upper edge of the unit’s capability, however (with the ice tank also filled), though in everyday use the NewAir EC111W is more than sufficient to take the edge of high temps.

The NewAir EC111W also has a very quiet operation, at least compared with other swamp coolers. The noise level tops in the mid 50s dB, depending on the fan speed. This lets you sleep peacefully even if you’re a light sleeper, with the unit on a timer across the room from you.

Pros

The NewAir EC111W is a surprising unit, with enough power to get you through hot days. This is all packed in a slim profile with a very low power footprint. That means you can keep using the unit for extended periods of time without worrying about how much you’re paying monthly.

Speaking of payments, the major draw of the unit is its asking price. You can get the unit’s power and efficiency for under $200. This would make the NewAir EC111W a very attractive deal for those who don’t need much from their cooler, aside from the cost and cooling power.

Cons

The only thing that the NewAir EC111W lacks is the extra bells and whistles of other brands. Of course, there is the matter of the non-adjustable louvres. Then, there’s also the lack of a better filter and an automatic shutdown recovery for a more holistic cooling and convenient experience. The unit also lacks provisions for outdoor or even prolonged use, especially because of its small water tank.

One could argue however that these “cons” are simply nitpicking, since the unit addresses the need of a specific segment of the market.

SPT SF-607H

10. SPT SF-607H Evaporative Cooler

For our last review item, let’s take a look at something from Sunpentown. This brand is trusted in the field of cooling, and its SPT SF-607H is among the best in its class. Featuring one of the stronger airflows in an indoor device and a feature called “Ultrasonic Humidifier”, the SPT SF-607H stands as a top-rated item on paper. It even has one special features that will make it a fairly coveted item for many. But how well does it stack in actual usage? Let’s find out.

Design

The SPT SF-607H doesn’t make a splash in the aesthetics section. In fact, it doesn’t even seem to make much effort at all. The device is boxy and plain, and while it does not look ugly it might turn off some people who are looking for a more modern-looking appliance. The unit is purely white, except around the oscillating louvres where the SPT SF-607H has a shade of gray. This Sunpentown model may be big on features, but its biggest weakness certainly is in its looks.

The unit has a row of buttons at the top that lets you control its various functions, such as its fan speed and its timer. The buttons allow for easy operation, as there are small LED indicators atop each to let you read and adjust the current settings. The timer could be set for up to 7.5 hours, so you could program the unit to turn off after the room has cooled sufficiently. This is a useful feature for those who wish to squeeze every last drop of efficiency from this evaporative air cooler. The swing function of the fan is also good for spreading the cool air around, eliminating any hot spots and making your room temperature much more comfortable.

The unit also comes with a 10-liter water tank, with a low-water indicator on the lower-right of the facade. It’s not particularly high-capacity, but it should be enough for most households. One thing lacking here is a continuous water inlet system to let you run the SPT SF-607H for hours on end without any refilling or maintenance. Even so, the cooling can still be boosted through the ice compartment.

The unit also has a remote control, which lets you control its full range of functions from a distance. All you need is a clear line of sight to the unit. The SPT SF-607H is also pretty lightweight, tipping the scales at 17 pounds when empty. Even at full tank, it won’t be too heavy to push around between rooms (though stairs may still be a challenge) thanks to its sturdy caster wheels.

Under the Hood

While it sits very plainly from the outside, the beauty of the SPT SF-607H is in the details. The brand boasts of the unit being run by an efficient computer chip, which optimizes its function. And this is where the Sunpentown unit gets one of its biggest advantages — it consumes only 65 watts of power, making its energy footprint almost negligible. It is to be noted that this level of power consumption is even less than some basic electric fans, which cannot cool the air as well as the SPT SF-607H could.

Another beauty of the unit is its “Ultrasonic Humidifier” function, which is basically just a fancy way of saying it humidifies hot and dry air without making everything sticky and wet. This is a good deal for those who want the cooling powers of a humidifier without the risk of waking up to moist sheets. Since all evaporative air coolers work best when fed with a steady supply of hot and dry air, the SPT SF-607H takes advantage of this completely.

Aside from treating the dryness of the air, the unit also takes care of some particulate matter like dust and pollen through the washable dust filter. Made of nylon, this can trap bigger pollutants. While it’s not as preferable as carbon filters, it’s still an appreciated addition considering some indoor units lack an equivalent. The filter may have to be washed up to once a week, though, depending on your surroundings.

Behind the filter is Sunpentown’s 3D Honeycomb cooling media which contributes greatly to the cooling power of the unit. The cooling pad is made of woven cellulose paper, treated with various ingredients to strengthen it and prevent both bacteria and algae from accumulating on it from constant water exposure. This means you can expect a longer lifespan out of your cooling media than usual, though if needed Sunpentown has replacements you can purchase. The 3D Honeycomb structure exposes the hot air to more of the cooling media, hence bringing its temp down more rapidly and more efficiently.

At high levels, the unit has an airflow of 475 CFM, which doesn’t lag far behind some of the indoor-rated evaporative coolers we have reviewed previously. This is a pleasant surprise considering the light energy consumption of the unit.

Pros

The SPT SF-607H is a great all-’rounder, especially for those looking for an energy efficient and yet suitably powerful indoor unit. Combining the timer feature and the unit’s low power consumption means you get continuous performance without dreading your next electric bill. The strong airflow and good cooling media also means you’ll be expecting a cooler and more comfortable environment.

The low power consumption also means you can enjoy lower operating noise, with the high setting remaining below the 60 dB mark.

Cons

The Sunpentown unit is made for one thing only: to provide good cooling without being too expensive. That means it lacks the versatility of some other units, such as auto-recovery after power outages. Its plain design also detracts somewhat from its attractiveness.

Overall, the SPT SF-607H is a great unit that appeals mainly to the eco-friendly crowd. It goes beyond spot cooling, and while not possessing the raw power of many units, it also has enough features to make your daily life more comfortable.

Conclusion

Although, a portable air conditioner no hose option is currently unavailable, give evaporative air coolers a try. These units can do the job. Each unit has a fan that effectively blows air as it evaporates the moisture, which creates a really comfortable cold air thereby reducing room temperature. Since there is no refrigeration process, you won’t be needing to exhaust air, and therefore, no vent is needed.
