In the recent years, there haven’t been many groundbreaking developments in the field of portable ACs. Most products have pretty much the same feature sets, with some excelling over others in certain respects. But when innovations do come, they tend to sort out certain standing problems. This makes such products instant hits within certain segments of the portable AC market.
The Avallon APAC120S is one such innovator. In most other respects, it’s a normal 12,000-BTU unit. Your first clue that something’s up will be the price tag a bit below $400 — a head higher than many of its peers. But this price comes with Avallon’s “InvisiMist” technology, which gives you a machine that never leaks.
The 12,000 BTU portable air conditioner uses standard 115-volt electrical outlet. It is ideal for the room of 435 square feet and also dehumidifies the air of 80 pints in a day.
It is easy to move with its caster wheels and you can take it with you in other rooms of your house.
The unit has an invisimist feature technology (no need to drain) and intelligent auto mode.
Design
The APAC120S is notable for its compact size, standing just a little above 29 inches tall. The base measures around 15 by 17 inches, making it pretty portable especially with the caster wheels and handle. The weight clocks in at around 68 pounds which is also on the lighter side and makes it good for transporting even between floors. You can also easily find a place for it even in a crowded floor.
Granted, the weight wouldn’t have been apparent with how the unit looks. The APAC120S looks very much like a fridge, its clean metal-gray facade only broken by the line of basic control buttons. The vents are located at the top, facing the ceiling. Behind them is the digital display and remote control, that allows you to pilot the appliance from across the room. Overall, the APAC120S shares the same design ideas as the Whynter ARC 131GD which we’ll look at later.
The controls are standard, allowing you to set the thermostat and choose one of the three fan speeds. It also allows you to toggle the dehumidifier, the auto mode, and the 24 hour programmable timer.
Being a dual hose unit, it can exhaust heat pretty quickly and cool down up to 435 square feet of space. All you have to do is connect the hoses to the included window kit, and you’re good to go. The unit is also equipped with a dual filtration system, a replaceable carbon filter and a washable pre-filter. The pre-filter is best washed weekly depending on usage, and would be the only bit of normal maintenance you’d have to do for the unit.
Under the Hood
The highlight of the APAC120S is definitely its “InvisiMist” system that enhances the self-evaporation system of most other portable AC units. The technology automatically kicks in when water accumulates in the unit’s tank, and turns the excess condensate into a fine mist. This mist is generated by pumping the water into the hot exhaust of the vent hose, taking both the water and the heat outside. This means that you will never have to empty another water tank nor worry about leaks with the Avallon APAC120s.
The only downside of this system is the fact that it would add possible water damage to the heat damage awaiting whatever is on the other side of your exhaust vent. That makes it even more important to ensure that nothing obstructs the vent, and that no children or pets would accidentally wander in front of it when the unit is in operation.
Aside from the added convenience, the InvisiMist system also allows you to engage the dehumidifier for longer periods of time without maintenance. This is important since the dehumidifier itself isn’t the best, capable only of taking out 80 pints of moisture a day. There’s not official word on how powerful the airflow is, but considering that the unit takes a bit of time to cool the surroundings it’s reasonable to think it’s on the lower end of the devices in this review.
Another important aspect of the unit is its energy efficiency. The unit has a flat 10 EER rating, meaning typical operation wouldn’t cost you more than $1 a day. This would offset the extra upfront fee that you will be paying for the Avallon. This can be further improved by using the 24-hour programmable timer, and the unit’s auto-mode. The latter allows the unit to adjust to the optimal cooling setting depending on the perceived temperature of the surroundings.
Another “auto” feature is the auto-restart that allows the unit to automatically pick up on your preferred settings after a power outage. This means uninterrupted cooling for those in areas where power is unreliable. The compressor is also of the really good quality, with a 5-year warranty from Avallon on top of the standard 1-year parts and labor warranty.
Pros
The Avallon APAC120S is a well-made and well-thought-of unit that has a lot of attractive features. These features make up for the slack in raw power, and the good energy efficiency rating means you can run the unit for longer times (to cool larger spaces) without it wrecking your energy bill.
The InvisiMist technology is innovative and takes out the fear of unexpected shutdowns and floor leaks in high-humidity places. The carbon filter is also a nice touch, which helps neutralize odor and other pollutants in the air.
Finally, the unit operates pretty quietly — at the loudest, 52 dB. That means you can place it in your bedroom and still sleep soundly, once you get used to the humming white noise.
Cons
The biggest con here is the price, which is again high for a 12,000-BTU unit. Also, if you’re looking for fast cooling, then this is not the device for you. It relies more on the “slow and steady” method, so it will take time to spread the cool air around.

If you think this segment is dominated by Whynter models, you’re pretty much right. Whynter has produced some of the best-selling portable ACs in both the 12,000-BTU and 14,000-BTU categories (in fact we have another one coming up later). This time around, the ARC-12SD provides an alternative for those who think that the previous entries are a bit of an overkill both in terms of price and cooling capacity. With 12,000-BTU capable of cooling a 400 square feet space, on paper this Whynter unit can hold its own against its bigger siblings. But how does it hold up in practice? Read on to find out.
Design
So far the ARC-12SD is the plain jane of the Whynter bunch, with a plain white facade broken only by a black strip near the top that contains the LCD screen and the controls. It was definitely not meant to stand out, and even its height of 34 inches lies on the shorter end. While it looks most at home in the traditional office space, it wouldn’t look bad in any living quarters either.
It is effortless to install and the adaptability strengthens to the extent that you have the option to install the window kit of up to 46 inches. The base measures 20 by 16.5 inches, sitting on caster wheels to make mobility a breeze. It’s on the light side too, at 71 pounds. You won’t have much trouble lugging it in between floors when needed (at least not as much as some others in this list). The unit connects to a dual hose setup that in turn attaches to the easy-install window kit. Both hose and kit are of the standard length, 60 and 46 inches max respectively.
The controls are highly-visible on the front panel of the unit, and can also be toggled from across the room through the simple remote control. The feature set here is also standard Whynter issue, with a 3-speed fan and a dehumidifier in addition to the cooling function. The thermostat can be set from 61 degrees to 89 degrees Fahrenheit.
The ARC-12SD also features a dual filter system, with a washable pre-filter and a carbon filter. While the carbon isn’t as thorough as the 3M Antibacterial filter featured in the ARC-143MX, it’s still good enough for eliminating the major pollutants in your air. Whynter recommends replacing this filter every 2-3 months. The pre-filter on the other hand should be washed weekly, if you are using the unit continuously.
Like all other Whynter units, the patented auto-drain system is present here which turns most of the condensate to additional cooling power. This Auto Drain system allows the unit to constantly run for long hours without always the need of draining water along with a 24 hour energy saving programmable timer. If you are not in a highly-humid area, you’d find there’s not much need to empty the water tank. In case you need to, though, it can be easily done through the rubber drain plug behind the unit.
Under the Hood
The ARC-12SD takes cues from the previous Whynter units we have reviewed, with its green design (lead-free body, R-410A refrigerant). The auto-restart feature is also present, meaning this little cooling tower can pick up from where it left in case of a power outage. For households suffering from issues with the current, the LCDI (Leakage-Current Detection and Interruption) protects the internals from suffering any permanent damage.
Whynter ARC-12SD not only features a 12,000 BTU capacity that delivers optimal cooling to spaces up to 400 square feet, it is capable of both cooling and dehumidifying simultaneously. The dehumidifier pulls out a respectable 96 pints of moisture from the air in a day, which would be adequate for most customers except those in highly-humid locations. Maybe a weaker point of the unit lies in its airflow, which clocks in at around 188 CFM at most. Considering it’s a lower-tier unit than the ARC-14S and ARC-143MX, it’s still pretty good. Whatever lack of air moving power the ARC-12SD has, the unit makes up for it with the efficient cooling of the dual-hose system.
Speaking of the hose, there have been reports of these getting a tad hotter than normal with other portable ACs. Some make do by wrapping the hose in insulation or aluminum foil. This is an important point because you have to make sure that whatever is on the other side of the window you install the exhaust in isn’t heat sensitive. This may also pose some hazard when there are kids or pets in the house.
Pros
The ARC-12SD is ideal for those looking for the famous Whynter brand of cooling without wanting to shell out extra for more powerful or more specialized units. It’s also great if you don’t have that big of a space to cool. For those experiencing power issues, the tandem of auto-restart and LCDI would be a godsend.
The dual-filters are also great for those looking to eliminate pollution from their space. Like those before it, the ARC-12SD aims to provide a set-it-and-forget-it cooling solution, except for the regular washing of the pre-filter and (when needed) the draining of the condensate.
Cons
That said, there are a few weak points to nitpick in the ARC-12SD. The dehumidifier isn’t the best of the bunch, so if “air conditioning” would mean drying out consistently moist air then there are better options in this review. The airflow is also somewhat lacking, and you may need to wait a bit more to eliminate some hotspots that may form.
The heat generated by the exhaust pipes may also be a cause for concern for some, so choosing where to install the unit is vital. And since we’re nitpicking, it should be pointed out that the ARC-12SD is barely quieter than the previous, more powerful units we reviewed. It still hovers around the 56 dB range, so if you tend to get disturbed in your sleep by the slightest noise this may not be ideal for the bedroom. You may want to look for a portable AC with a better airflow to force the cool air into your room from another area of the house.

5. EdgeStar AP14001HS Extreme Cool Dual Hose
EdgeStar “Extreme Cool” portable ACs are known for being some of the most powerful and energy efficient devices in their category. The AP14001HS is no exception, with a twist — it also provides a heater function that turns it into an effective year-round solution for your home. It can regulate the temperature in spaces as large as 525 square feet, largely through the added boost of its dual hose feature.
This unit’s cooling power is pretty remarkable, especially considering that (despite the numbers in the model name) it only has 8,600-BTUs (DOE 2017 Standard) of cooling power. On paper, that should have lined it up among the weakest portable ACs we’ve reviewed! But the EdgeStar has some very good tricks up its sleeve, which we’ll discover in this review. The EdgeStar AP14001HS Extreme Cool, however, still packs a 14,000 BTU (ASHRAE-128 Standard) of cooling power under its belt and can easily cool a room of a size of 525 square feet.
It is an eco-friendly and powerful portable air conditioner that can be used for cooling all kinds of rooms. The EdgeStar AP14001HS Extreme Cool doubles as a 85-pint a day dehumidifier, for that reason it can give you good quality air.
Design
The design is pretty much reminiscent of Whynter units, with the gray facade bordered by black outlines. The unit’s control panel is at the top, along with the indicator lights and the illuminated LCD screen. The controls are clear and easy to see, even from across the room. Of course, there is a remote control from which you could operate the basic functions including the operation mode (3-speed fan, cool, heat, timer, dehumidifier).
The AP1400HS also has caster wheels to help you in moving it from one room to another. This is standard, as the 75-pound, 35-inch tall unit isn’t exactly portable (even among fellow portable ACs). Even without these, however, EdgeStar could have banked upon its ability to cool large areas. You don’t really have to move the unit to reach the far end of your space.
The base measures 16 by 19 inches so it’s not exactly slim either, but just slim enough to fit in between other appliances and furniture. From there you can hook it up to a window using the quick-install window kit. Reaching the nearest power outlet isn’t much of a problem, since the unit’s power cord reaches up to 6 feet.
Like most other models of this caliber, the EdgeStar AP14001HS Extreme Cool has a self-evaporative system that automatically drains most if not all the moisture that the dehumidifier collects. For those extra-humid days when the auto-drain doesn’t completely work, you can use the direct drain at the back of the unit. This allows you to attach a length of hose from the back of the unit directly to a drain of your choice. This eliminates the need to periodically check the unit’s water tank.
EdgeStar also prides in its durable design that uses stainless steel for added integrity. There have been reports of EdgeStar’s less-than-stellar customer service (only 90 days labor warranty, a year on parts), but the fact they invested in a durable unit to boot could allay the fears of potential buyers.
Under the Hood
Most of the EdgeStar’s magic comes from within. The dual-hose setup allows the unit to scrub out heat from the air up to 40% faster. With an airflow of 254 CFM at most, it can then throw the cool air in a blast towards its surroundings. That makes up for the fact that it lacks oscillating louvres to beat hot spots.
Weirdly enough, there’s no official word from EdgeStar about how powerful the dehumidifier is. From testing, however, we found that this feature is decent enough to maintain a comfortable internal humidity across a wide variety of locations. The direct drain feature also rarely comes into play, meaning on a normal day you can be assured of a leak-free operation.
Many users purchase the AP14001HS for the additional heater function, which offers an added dimension to air conditioning by keeping your temp constant no matter the season or weather outside. However, it should be noted that the built-in heater is only meant as an auxiliary to any heating system you already have installed. While the cooler can take care of big spaces, the heater isn’t as powerful.
Perhaps the greatest feature of this EdgeStar unit is its top-of-the-line energy efficiency. An Energy Efficiency Rating of 9 or higher is generally considered great, but the AP14001HS has an EER of 11.3. That means you won’t be expecting any spikes in your electric bill when you buy this unit. This is significant since by nature, portable ACs already consume less energy than regular fixed ACs. Combine this with the unit’s programmable features, and you can even cut back on your electricity savings. The timer allows you to turn the AC on and off at specified intervals, so the EdgeStar would only flex its muscles when it matters.

6. Avallon APAC140C Portable Air Conditioner Dual Hose
A step up from the previously-reviewed APAC120S, the Avallon APAC140C offers a much more powerful 14,000-BTU solution that can cool up to 525 square feet. This is the more common of the two Avallon units reviewed here, but aside from minor differences (mostly on the looks) you might find it hard to differentiate the two models.
So let’s dive in and see whether paying a little more extra (from an already expensive base unit) is worth it!
Design
To distinguish the APAC140C, the face of the unit is a darker gray and accented by a white top. The design is the same, with the vent facing the top and the control panel docked and doubling as a remote control. This quirk also appears in other portable AC brands, but its not for everyone since losing the panel means being unable to operate the whole unit.
The dimensions are slightly bigger than its 12,000-BTU sibling, with a height of almost 34 inches and a base of around 16 by 20 inches. The dual hose system is also present, and there are no changes to its size and that of the window vent kit. These serve as the passages for the collected condensate exhausted by the InvisiMist technology. That means there’s no tank to empty either, which is good news for those looking for a maintenance-free unit.
Unlike a traditional fixed AC, the Avallon APAC140C also doesn’t require permanent installation and utilizes four caster wheels to make transferring an effortless process. The unit weighs around 73 pounds, which is pretty lightweight compared to competing units. That means you can lug around the APAC140C easily throughout your rooms, especially with its handles and caster wheels. As before, though, you need to be extra careful where you install it since the fine mist mixed with the heat that comes out of the vents have the potential to cause water damage. The window kit is pretty easy to install and uninstall anyway, so you can always choose the optimal place. For non-standard windows, however, this will be a bit of a chore (as it is with all other portable ACs) because you will need to improvise to make sure the opening is sealed.
The model also has a dual-filter setup. The first layer consists of the pre-filter, which should be washed at least once a week depending on usage. Behind it is a carbon filter, which is perfect for removing pollutants and other particulates in the air. This makes the unit perfect for those needing total air conditioning, especially those who live in cities and other polluted areas.

Like before, the star of the show is the InvisiMist system that takes care of the condensate in addition to Avallon’s version of the auto-evaporation system. This system allows the unit to constantly run long hours without draining any water. When water starts to collect in the reservoir, the APAC140C starts feeding it to the exhaust hose where the heat will evaporate it. This means unlike competing models, the Avallon does not shut down unexpectedly even in high humidity days.

On the plus side, the Avallon APAC140C’s dehumidifier has more potential. Capable of scrubbing 86 pints of moisture a day, you can leave this unit on for extended periods of time and get some high quality air. It can also be operated separately from the 3-speed fan and the cooler, so if humidity is your only problem then you have a choice.
As for the robustness of the internal construction, the buyer will have some assurance from the extended 5-year compressor warranty that Avallon offers on top of the usual 1-year parts warranty. You can expect the APAC140C to perform for years, so long as it is well taken care of.

The Avallon APAC140C shares the same strengths as its little brother. It has the same maintenance-free advantage, so long as you keep the pre-filter clean. The carbon filter and dehumidifier work together to provide not just a cooler but overall better quality air.
If you live in a highly-humid area, then the 86 pints per day of dehumidification coupled with the InvisiMist system would be to your benefit. Be prepared to shell out extra both up front and every month for the added convenience, though in comparison this unit’s EER rating is up to par if not better than competing units from other brands. It’s also pretty quiet, operating at 52 dB at most.
Cons
The biggest downside of the Avallon APAC140C is that it does not really offer many outstanding traits that would warrant its purchase. The InvisiMist technology pretty much evens out the edge its dehumidifier would give it over the 120S, so the latter would still be the practical choice if you’re on a budget. Then again, if you’re going for raw cooling and dehumidification power, there are better ones out there. Most brands still offer an auto evaporation feature so unless you’re in a constantly wet climate you won’t be missing out.
Overall, the APAC140C is best for those who want to tread the fine middle line between low-maintenance and high power — though you’d get a bit more of the first than the latter.

7. Whynter ARC-131GD Dual Hose
Did we say that the previously-reviewed ARC-12SD is Whynter’s attempt at a middle ground for portable ACs? It’s not the only one, and the ARC-131GD gives us a curious twist on the subject. Technically a 13,000-BTU unit, its performance is on the same level as its 12,000-BTU sibling in most respects. However, it does have a shining quality that would make it worth your consideration: it mixes a compact stature with decent power.
This 13000 BTU unit can be easily moved between rooms with little effort because of easy-to-move caster wheels, no need for carrying or lifting. It can remove 91 pints of room moisture air per day to neutralize the heat of the room and sufficiently strong to cool a room up to 420 square feet. It features 4 fan speeds and automatic cooling, for custom climate control. The unit is CFC free, making it eco-friendly and comes with washable pre-filter and activated carbon filter.
The Whynter ARC-131GD air conditioner has an LED display and everything you’ll be needing is in the easy to use remote. This air conditioner also has a programmable 24-hour time and auto restart function to allow for convenient saving of your settings.
Design
One look at the ARC-131GD and you’ll know what we are talking about — the unit, in the world of portable ACs, is fairly compact. While not as short as the previously-reviewed Avallon APAC120S, it stands at just about 31 inches in height, and its base measures just around 17 by 15 inches. Now, there’s a lot of smaller units out there if size is all you’re getting at, but how many of them offer enough power to cool a 420 square feet space? Add in the caster wheels and the 70-pound weight and you can freely wheel this into any corner of the house that needs treatment. Squeeze it between furniture and other appliances, if you will.
The uniqueness of the unit continues with its other physical aspects (and, as we shall see later, continues into the internals). The metallic gray shade is pretty standard, and the plain facade is only broken by the basic controls at the top. Again like the Avallon APAC120S, though, these controls do not contain the familiar LCD display. The display is instead located in the landscape-oriented remote control that docks at the top of the accordion-style air vents. As a result, it tilts considerably upward when the unit is in operation, offset only by the fact that you’re most likely looking at it from the top down anyway so it’s still visible. This panel also contains the rest of the controls that toggle the fan, dehumidifier, the programmable timer, and the cooling.
The unit has the Whynter patented auto-evaporation system, so it can only work when the double-hose exhaust system is mounted. Weirdly, both the window kit and the hoses can extend to a maximum of 47 inches — non-standard sizes for either. While the slightly larger window kit may be nice, the much shorter hose is definitely a drawback. There are hose extender sets for sale, but not everyone may be into the additional purchase.
In cases when the unit isn’t able to recycle all of the moisture, there is a water tank built into the back of the unit that should be drained when full. This shouldn’t happen often, however. In case you do need to pull the drain plug, you’ll be informed by the unit shutting off and flashing a red light.
On the other hand, it takes a cue from its bigger siblings in the Whynter ARC lineup and includes a carbon filter behind a washable pre-filter. The ARC-131GD can clean the air of common pollutants, aside from trapping dust and other particulates. The filter should be washed around once a week depending on your usage.
The unit is small enough to be stowed away when not in use, and if you will do so Whynter also provides a cover bag with pocket to protect it from the elements.
Under the Hood
Despite being a 13,000-BTU unit, the ARC-131GD is not a step up in all respects from, say, the 12,000-BTU ARC-12SD. For example, its dehumidifier scrubs 91 pints of water per day. It’s a respectable number by itself, but a tad less than the 12SD. The auto-evaporation system promises to turn almost all of the scrubbed water into additional cooling power, though, so the ease of maintenance is a consolation. Also, the airflow is just at 188 CFM which means it doesn’t particularly excel at moving the cold air around bigger spaces.
The rest of the internals are similar to those found in other ARC models. The whole unit is CFC and lead-free, owing to the brand’s Go Green Mission. There’s also the auto-restart system that wakes up the unit with its running settings after a power interruption. The LCDI (Leakage-Current Detection and Interruption) plug is also present, giving the unit additional protection in case of power surges and similar occurrences.
Because of its BTU rating, the ARC-131GD’s electricity usage is similar to more powerful models. There is also an automatic mode that detects the area’s ambient heat. It then automatically selects the optimal cooling settings — perfect for a fully hands-off approach to cooling your home.
Pros
For all practical purposes, the ARC-131GD is a cooling beast in a compact package. While it shows some weakness in specs when compared to competing models (both within Whynter’s lineup and from other brands), its cooling ability is still surprising if you’re used to bigger units. While its size is its main draw, it does not forget the essentials of being an AC and has all the bells and whistles you need for a comfortable home.
Knowing that it can also purify the air (to a considerable extent) and provide near maintenance-free usage is a great plus. Here is a portable AC that goes out of the way in many respects for your cooling pleasure.
Cons
Still, not everyone would buy it for the size. Those looking for better dehumidification would find their match elsewhere. Also, the small size and not-so-powerful airflow means it cannot push the cold air as efficiently over and between appliances and furniture. Finding the optimal position is very important if you are looking to cool a bigger space quickly.
As is the case with the other Whynter units, this one isn’t very quiet either. It still peaks at 56 dB so light sleepers should take note. Soft conversations are often held at around 55 dB, so if you’re not keen on hearing a humming white noise then there are other options.
Overall, the Whynter ARC-131GD is an interesting unit, once you get over some of its unusual design ideas. Many customers have found that it does the job properly, with its dual-hose feature being an asset in providing rapid cooling despite the size.

8. SPT WA-1140DE Dual Hose
On paper, nothing really sets the Sunpentown WA-114DE apart from the others we have reviewed so far. Being an 11,000-BTU unit, the SPT can only cool rooms of up to 350 square feet. It is the weakest unit in terms of cooling in this review, and most other functions follow suit. And yet, this SPT unit might just be the best unit you can get if you want a portable AC to stand in your bedroom. With an operating sound level of below 50 dB even on high settings, this is the quietest unit we have laid hands on in the list. Below we’ll be exploring more of what the WA-1140DE has to offer.
SPT WA-1140DE is a 11,000 BTU cooling power portable air conditioner with a self-evaporating system. It comes with an extendable exhaust hose of up to 59 inches, along with built-in water tank or extended water tube for continuous drainage.
Design
One other thing that makes the SPT bedroom-friendly is its nondescript white design. It’s not flashy or modern in any way, but it looks “comfortable” — it doesn’t stand out, and it doesn’t stand in the way. Now, that last phrase might not be entirely true when it comes to its size, since its height (33.5 inches) and base (18 by 18.5 inches) aren’t compact even compared to some 14,000-BTU units. However, the sleek shape of the unit does make it easy on the eyes.
Moving the unit from one room to another might take more effort than you’d think, owing to the 82-pound weight. There are caster wheels and well-placed handles to help out, but we’ve seen lighter units elsewhere. Considering the low cooling power of the unit, you might have to do the moving often if you want the cold to follow you in different parts of the house. Of course, this is also influenced by your crib’s layout and some other factors.
The unit also features the bells and whistles we are used to, such as a control panel which can be operated by remote. Here you have the option to use the 3-speed fan, the dehumidifier, and the cooler. There’s also a 24-hour programmable timer. You can set your unit to turn on even before you’re home, to cool the air for your arrival. The comparatively weak cooling is somewhat improved by the auto-swing louvers that ensure the distribution of cool air and the elimination of hot spots. Also, the thermostat allows good temp flexibility ranging from 64 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
The SPT WA-1140DE also has an auto-evaporate feature, so it relies on its expandable hose as its exhaust vent. The hose itself expands to about 5.5 feet, which is a tad longer than those found in other units. The window vent kit is fairly standard issue, meaning you can easily install and dismantle it without the use of tools. It fits most standard windows, though you may have to improvise in other setups.
In cases when the auto-evaporation does not thoroughly work, the unit has a tank which could either be emptied manually (the unit will turn off to signal the tank is full) or attached to a direct drain hose. The latter allows for a more maintenance -free approach, so long as you place the other end of the hose in the drain. Speaking of maintenance, the only other bit of maintenance you will be doing with the unit is with the washable pre-filter, which has to be washed once a week or depending on your usage.
Under the Hood
The unit moves air at 176 CFM, which is substantial for small areas. The louvers arguably help make this airflow better. And of course, this is still a dual-hose feature that cools the air around 40% faster than its single-hose counterparts.
The dehumidifier, on the other hand, is also pretty decent at 51 pints per day. While this would make the unit inadequate to condition particularly humid air, it would be enough under regular weather. The auto-evaporate feature and the direct-drain option would help in keeping cooling uninterrupted.
The SPT WA-1140DE has an EER rating of around 8.8, which isn’t bad but remains below the golden standard of 10. While that means it’s not exceedingly good at converting the power it draws into cooling, the lower power consumption still makes it a good option for the household.
For the fans of appliance safety, the Sunpentown unit features a lot of safety thanks to its fireproof PVC housing. This somewhat offsets the fact that it doesn’t have an extended warranty like other brands have. The internals are fairly sturdily built, but in the worst case you can rest assured the unit won’t suddenly catch fire. And in the age of exploding appliances, this is a good consolation.
Pros
The primary draw of the unit is its being very bedroom-friendly. You can have another, more powerful unit cooling any other part of your home, but most people would prefer this one for sleeping. It is unobtrusive both in design and in its noise levels, and its fireproof body gives it an additional level of safety for closed spaces (with a lot of flammables).
It’s also good for those smaller areas that would not need the raw power of, say, a Whynter or an EdgeStar. Even if you don’t have somewhere to drain the water into directly, the tank option will let you operate the unit even in carpeted places. Considering that it’s not big on maintenance either, then it would certainly attract plenty of buyers.
Cons
The SPT WA-1140DE isn’t the unit you’d go to if you’re looking for raw power and dehumidification potential. It’s also not the best in versatility, with nothing but the very basic features expected of a portable AC. Being compact is also not its strongest suit.
Hence if you live in a hot and humid environment, there are much better options in this review.
Overall, this SPT unit still has its place among those who need something quiet by their bedside, especially for those who are easily disturbed by the characteristic white noise made by portable ACs. Haier has always been a go-to name for efficient cooling, and even in the 14,000-BTU segment the name does not disappoint. The double-hose HPND14XCT is in fact one of the most attractive units in this review, by virtue of its quick cooling capacity and its silent operation. However, the unit also comes at a price higher than some of its peers. Is the investment worth it in actual use? Find out as you read on.

There is also a window at the top that shows the LCD display, which in turn shows the current mode and the thermostat. The unit can operate at ranges of between 61 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which is a decent range.
The louvres swing up from the top, and has a 4-way direction that allows you to focus the cold air onto any spot in your house. There are three cooling and fan speeds, the latter for when you need to circulate the air without having to cool it. There is also a remote control for easy adjustments.
The unit is around 30 inches high, and has a base of around 15 by 18 inches. It’s not much larger than many of its competitors in the dual-hose 14,000 BTU sector. It weighs 73 pounds, which is somewhat lighter as well. With its 6-feet long power cord, you can roll it into any room and plug it in even if you have to wedge it between furniture and other appliances.
This Haier unit has a washable filter, which is pretty much the only piece of maintenance you have to perform on it. Wash it once a week or so and you’re set. For humid places, there’s hardly a need to empty the tank with the self-evaporation feature that recycles the condensate into extra cooling power. Of course, this means there will be lots of heat pumped out to the five-feet long exhaust hoses. So long as you install the window kit without any heat-sensitive item on the other end, you should be fine. In that rare case when the tank is full, you can use the drain to easily empty it without having to tilt the unit over.
Under the Hood
When it comes to both airflow and dehumidification functions, the Haier HPND14XCT isn’t the best of the bunch. The former measures at 190 CFM, and the latter at 90 pints per day. It’s not the worst either, but rather just a compromise for its top feature — its incredibly silent operation. In fact, its one of the most quiet dual hose units, with a noise level of low- to mid- 40s in decibels. That means if you’re the type who needs your portable AC in your bedroom, then you can sleep soundly with only a faint white noise to accompany you.
The HPND14XCT also excels in other factors, particularly in the safety side. The unit has a thermistor, which is a heat-sensitive resistor. The thermistor trips the unit when the operational heat exceeds safe levels, preventing any damage to the unit itself and to those around it. The evaporator coil is coated, giving it further protection, durability, and efficiency. Then, there’s the R-410A that is both efficient and environment-friendly. As for the unit’s plug, it has the LCDI technology that protects the unit from power surges and similar current anomalies. This feature likewise prevents damage to the Haier’s internals.
This portable AC unit also has an auto-restart feature that allows it to recover from any event of power failure. That means uninterrupted cooling without having to turn on and set the device’s settings manually. The auto-restart remembers your last preference, so you you don’t have to fiddle with the controls again.
One other strength of the unit is the fact that it allows for only a very low amount of infiltration air. Pros
The two main draws of the Haier HPND14XCT are its efficiency and its remarkably quiet operation. If you live in a hot climate and you need quick cooling, and if you or someone else in the house tends to get disturbed by the buzzing sound that most portable ACs produce, then this unit is for you.
It’s also recommended for those who are looking for a slew of safety features, since the Haier HPND14XCT is protected from most internal damage through the LCDI plug and thermistor. As a plus, Haier is well-known for its support so you don’t have to worry about the unit itself.
Cons
While the unit gets rid of heat pretty quickly, its dehumidifier is not as efficient. If you are living in a highly-humid area, then it might be wiser to look elsewhere. Huge spaces also might not benefit as much from the HPND14XCT due to its low CFM.
Aside from this, the only other downside of this Haier unit is its relative rarity. It was first released some years back, and it would be tough to find these in stock. However, since there are no upgrades for this one yet, it would still remain a well-recommended model.

This is the first appearance of the Impecca brand in our review, and it joins the fray with a 12,000-BTU dual hose model. Capable of cooling around 450 square feet, this is a rare entry as the company making the portable AC does not specialize in cooling equipment. Instead, Impecca’s website showcases various electronics and home products, and even wooden equipment!
Still, it’s a worthy candidate as the unit offers a well-rounded set of features. Let’s dig in and see how the IPA-1244-C stacks up.
Impecca IPA2-1244-C is a portable air conditioner with 12,000 BTU and eco-friendly refrigerant, which comfortably cools areas average of 350 square feet.
It has Digital LED display, precise feather-touch controls and full function remote control. The powerful air flow and quiet operation around 53dbA is a great asset that keeps it one of the top.
Design
The unit is fairly spartan in appearance. It has an all-white facade with a notch that serves aesthetic purposes at the top. At the top-rear portion of the unit is a set of white feather-touch buttons, and a digital display for the thermostat. In front of it is the swing-up louvers that release a blast of cold air.
The small and stocky appearance of the unit makes it ideal for areas with a lot of furniture and appliances. Its has an extra-long power cord at 7.5 feet, which together with its caster wheels gives it an excellent mobility. Some might find the caster wheels a bit unreliable, though. They are substantially thinner than standard wheels, and there is a very real danger of it breaking during repeated transport, especially up and down stairs.
In contrast with the modern-looking unit, the unit’s remote control is fairly traditional, set apart only by the presence of a digital display. The buttons are old-school rubber, which makes them fairly durable. They’re also clearly marked and helps you control all the unit’s functions such as the cooling, fan, dehumidifier, and the 24-hour programmable timer. There are three cooling and fan speeds, giving you a wide variety of options depending on your environment.
The dual hoses of the unit carry its version of the self-evaporative feature which takes care of collected condensates. It’s surprisingly effective, and there’s little need to empty the tank even in humid areas. The filter will still have to be cleaned around once a week (or depending on your usage), but this can be easily accessed and serviced.
Setup is very easy, as the unit comes with a window install kit that does not need any tools. All you need is to hook it up to any standard window, and you’re good to go.
Under the Hood
What’s surprising is the fact that Impecca is not very forthright with the details of the IPA2-1244-C. We do know it has blasts of a maximum of 282 CFM in high mode, which is head and shoulders above most of the competition. That means this little unit can spread cold wind throughout the area through sheer force, making up for its lack of oscillating louvres. This is great for those who live in very hot environments, and you can make the most out of it in areas smaller than its rated 450 square feet. Then, the air flow itself is already enough to quickly cool the surroundings. The unit also operates from 62 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, which is a range superior to many and helps establish its suitability for high-temp environments. In contrast the company does not say exactly how strong the dehumidifier is, but in tests it is powerful enough to keep anyone dry in normal humidity.
Neither does it give us any information on how the unit’s internals are protected. Judging by the information published, however, we can infer it’s pretty robust. It has a pretty good EER rating of 8.9, and it also uses industry-standard components including the environment friendly R-410A refrigerant. It also has its own automatic features which further helps conserve electricity, drawing on its readings of the surroundings to select the perfect settings based on your preferred temperature.
Electrical efficiency can be further improved by its sleep timer and 24-hour on/off timer, ensuring you get cooling precisely when you need it. There’s also an auto-restart mode in case of power outages, so it’s basically a set-and-forget appliance.
The unit operates at a noise level of 52-55 dB, depending on the setting. This is a tad louder than most of the units reviewed here, but not too much as to be noticeable. Still, light sleepers who cannot get used to the humming sound most portable ACs produce would not want this unit in their bedrooms. Thankfully it’s good enough to be positioned in another room (depending on the layout of the home) and still cool the adjacent ones.
